Definition
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) refers to the minimum quantity of a product that a manufacturer is willing to produce or sell as part of a single order.
MOQ may be expressed in units, kilograms, liters, cartons, or other quantities depending on the type of product. Its level depends on factors such as the production process, manufacturing setup costs, materials, packaging, and the degree of product customization.
Why Should Importers Know This?
MOQ directly affects the initial investment required to start cooperation with a new manufacturer and the level of risk associated with the first order.
A high MOQ may result in a lower unit price due to economies of scale, but it also requires more capital and increases the risk of being left with a large quantity of unsold inventory.
For first-time importers, the ability to order a smaller trial batch can therefore be more valuable than achieving the absolute lowest unit price.
Can MOQ Be Negotiated?
Yes. MOQ is often negotiable, particularly when starting a new business relationship. A manufacturer may agree to a smaller trial order, especially if there is potential for long-term cooperation.
However, reducing the MOQ may result in a higher unit price.

In Practice
When placing your first order, it is worth negotiating not only the price but also the minimum production quantity.
MOQ is not always an unchangeable limit – effective negotiation can allow you to test a product while committing significantly less capital.
