Definition

EXW (Ex Works) is an Incoterms® rule under which the seller makes the goods available to the buyer at an agreed location, most commonly at the seller’s factory or warehouse. The seller is not responsible for loading the goods onto the collecting vehicle or for export clearance.

From the point at which the goods are made available, the buyer generally bears the costs and risks associated with collecting the goods, transportation, export formalities, international freight, and import procedures.

Why Should Importers Know This?

EXW may initially appear attractive because the supplier’s quoted price is often lower than under Incoterms® rules that include additional transportation services. In practice, however, the importer takes on a much broader range of responsibilities.

When importing from China, export formalities can be particularly important. In some situations, a foreign buyer may face difficulties arranging all the required procedures on the Chinese side independently.

For this reason, when importing from Asia, it is often worth comparing EXW with alternatives such as FOB or FCA and assessing which option provides the best balance of cost, control, and responsibility.

In Practice

Before choosing EXW, calculate all costs from the factory to the final destination. A low EXW purchase price does not necessarily mean the lowest total import cost.

EXW gives the importer a high level of control, but also a broad range of responsibilities – making it not always the best solution for less experienced importers.
