Definition

A Bill of Lading (B/L) is one of the most important documents used in ocean freight. It confirms that the carrier has received the cargo for transportation and sets out key details and conditions of the shipment.

Depending on its type and legal structure, a Bill of Lading may also function as a document representing the right to control or dispose of the goods. However, not every modern B/L should automatically be treated as a “document of title” in the simplest sense.

Why Should Importers Know This?

A Bill of Lading contains important information about the shipment, including the shipper and consignee, description of the cargo, port of loading, port of destination, and transportation details.

The document also plays an important role in the release of cargo at the destination port. Depending on the procedure used, the release may require presentation of the original B/L or an alternative arrangement such as a Telex Release.

Errors in the consignee’s details, cargo description, or other information can lead to delays and additional costs.

Before the shipment leaves the port of origin, carefully check all information included on the Bill of Lading and make sure that the agreed cargo release procedure has been properly arranged with the carrier or freight forwarder.
