Definition

OEM, or Original Equipment Manufacturer, refers to a cooperation model in which a manufacturer produces a product according to the customer’s design, specification or requirements, and the finished product may be sold under the customer’s brand.

The OEM model allows an entrepreneur to create their own product or brand without having to build their own factory. The manufacturer is responsible for the production process, while the importer or brand owner defines the requirements regarding the product, materials, technical parameters, appearance or packaging.

In practice, the scope of OEM cooperation can vary significantly – from the production of a relatively simple product based on existing documentation to more advanced projects requiring custom molds, tooling and technical solutions.

Why Should Importers Know This?

 OEM gives an entrepreneur the opportunity to create a product that stands out in the market and develop their own brand without investing in their own manufacturing facility.

At the same time, OEM production requires significantly more preparation than purchasing a standard product available from a catalogue. It may require a detailed specification, product samples, approval of a Golden Sample, packaging preparation and, in some cases, investment in molds and tooling.

It is also important to remember that with OEM production, it is particularly important to clearly define the rights to the design, documentation, molds, patterns and brand. The more complex the product, the more important it becomes to precisely establish all terms of cooperation with the manufacturer.

OEM is particularly interesting for companies that want to move from simply importing ready-made products to building their own brand and developing a long-term competitive advantage.

When producing an OEM product, the importer should clearly define the requirements regarding the product, materials, technical specifications, packaging, and brand markings. Before starting mass production, it is advisable to approve the sample and all project details in writing. This helps reduce the risk of the finished product differing from what was expected.
